Sonora and Ricky
Photographer: Pereda Photography
Ricky and I met while waiting in line at Chipotle. He asked if I wanted to sit and eat with him, but I passed on the impromptu “date.” He had a nice smile and lots of confidence so instead I gave him my number. A few days later we went on our first date. Fast forward a ways and we were in St. Thomas for my 30th birthday. After a wonderful day, we were sitting on our balcony and he told me to close my eyes so he could give me my present. When I opened my eyes, I saw him holding my ring. He asked me to be his wife and best friend for the rest of our lives. After a giggling fit, I said yes. The rest of the trip was perfect!
We chose to get married at Mt Airy Mansion in Upper Marlboro. With its beautiful gardens and indoor space, it had the 1940s feel that we wanted. We went with a brown and pink theme that we incorporated throughout the wedding including the bridesmaid dresses, cake and table settings. I love flowers and I wanted to choose ones that reflected the spring season. My florist did a wonderful job accomplishing this by having gardenias in my hair and pink tulips in the table vases and in the bouquets.
I am Caribbean and wanted to incorporate my heritage in to the wedding. My mom is a cake baker and it was only natural that she made mine. It was a lovely four-tier traditional Caribbean rum cake with brown ribbon, swiss dots and flowers. We also hired a steel drummer to play before the ceremony, during the processional and during the cocktail hour. I walked down the aisle to “Here Comes the Bride” on the steel drums. My dress was handmade by my godmother who also made my first outfit for me to come home from the hospital when I was born and my christening gown. It meant alot that she was able to outfit me for another important day.
The ceremony was exactly what we wanted: personal, quiet and a true confession of our deep love and commitment to each other in front of our closest friends and family. Also, I recommend expecting the unexpected to happen and be flexible. We got married during the rainiest Mays in Maryland’s recent history. It worked out well though because we had a back up plan for the indoor space, plus the rain made our photos look gorgeous including one under an umbrella.
We ended everything with a wonderful trip to St. Martin where we could relax and just enjoy being husband and wife.
